Essaouira – The Government of Morocco and the European Union (EU) signed, Friday in Essaouira, an agreement relating to the first European Union (EU) support program for Moroccan cultural and creative industries.
This agreement was initialed by the Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, and the EU Ambassador to Morocco, Mrs. Patricia Lombart Cussac, in the presence of Mr. André Azoulay, Councilor of His Majesty the King and Mrs. Neila Tazi, President of the Federation of Cultural and Creative Industries.
This program is the first of its kind under the Morocco-European Union Partnership. It aims to promote culture through the strengthening of cultural and creative industries as a vector of economic development and employment for young people. It will be implemented at several levels and in particular with the Federation of Cultural and Creative Industries of Morocco.
On this occasion, Ms. Cussac declared that “culture is a tremendous lever for rapprochement and mutual enrichment between peoples. Our shared prosperity partnership will now deepen with a dimension for Moroccan cultural and creative industries”.
And to add that “our ambition is to contribute together to the creation of jobs for young people, to Moroccan-European initiatives and to highlight the cultural diversity of Morocco in all its dimensions, including in particular through the promotion Moroccan Judeo heritage”.
For his part, Mr. Bensaid pointed out that “culture is the reflection of the soul of a nation, and today we are launching a new chapter for Moroccan cultural and creative industries”, explaining that this program of support, “we are opening the doors to innovation, economic development and employment for young people, in accordance with the Royal Vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI”.
“Together, we will highlight the richness and cultural diversity of Morocco. This initiative will fully contribute to the development of our youth and the development of Morocco as a whole,” he said.
With a budget of 110 million dirhams, the support program for Moroccan cultural and creative industries will be implemented through three major components: Project grants, support for the Federation of Creative and Cultural Industries and the mobilization of expertise.
The partnership between Morocco and the EU emphasizes common challenges such as economic development, innovation, climate change, justice, security, mobility and good governance.
The support program for cultural and creative industries reinforces the “Euro-Moroccan partnership for shared prosperity” between Morocco and the European Union which, since June 2019, has been structured around four spaces, including a space for shared knowledge. This space is dedicated to intercultural promotion and rapprochement between peoples. It focuses on strengthening exchanges on cultural policies and industries, cultural entrepreneurship, heritage preservation, and training in artistic sectors.
