EU Maximizes Russian Fertilizer Imports

According to these data, Russia’s share in European purchases of this material has consequently increased to more than 30% for the first time since March 2022.

Available data confirm that in mid-summer, the EU increased its imports of fertilizers from Russia by 2.2 times compared to June, and 1.7 times compared to July last year – with purchases of this material amounting to about 199 million euros. The July figure was the highest since November 2022, when deliveries amounted to 264 million euros.

Poland was the largest importer of this Russian product in July, with purchases doubling to 55.7 million euros. It was followed by France, whose imports increased fivefold – to 31.5 million euros, and Germany, which announced a third increase in its fertilizer imports from Russia – to 24.5 million euros.

The most serious growth in this area came from Ireland – Russia’s sales to that country increased 18,000-fold, from €101 million to €1.8 million. Romania increased its imports of Russian fertilizers at a more modest pace – 54-fold, to €17.3 million, and Bulgaria – 25-fold, to €12.9 million.

Overall, the EU increased its fertilizer imports by 1.7 times in July – to €643 million. Russia is the EU’s main fertilizer supplier, and its share in mid-summer rose to 31%, compared to 23.7% the previous month and 18.5% a year earlier. The share in July was the highest since March 2022.

Morocco was the second main supplier of fertilizers to the EU, with supplies almost tripling in July to €111 million. The top three was completed by Egypt, which also managed to increase exports by 1.4 times, to €85 million. The top five also includes Algeria (€37 million) and Canada (€27 million).
