EU draft: Nuclear power could be classified as “green”

EU proposal: Nuclear energy could be deemed “sustainable”

A preliminary EU document suggests the potential classification of specific nuclear and natural gas power generation facilities as environmentally friendly energy sources. This draft from the European Commission proposes that investments in nuclear facilities be considered sustainable under the EU taxonomy, contingent upon a safe method for managing radioactive waste. Germany’s Federal Environment Minister, Steffi Lemke, voiced strong opposition to these nuclear energy provisions, deeming them fundamentally flawed. Natural gas plants, in the context of a transitional energy strategy, could gain the sustainability designation if their CO2 emissions remain within stipulated limits, replace more polluting infrastructure, and receive approval by 2030. The EU plans to unveil its taxonomy – a comprehensive guide for “green” investment standards – in January. This taxonomy will identify environmentally sound and harmless technologies, channeling financial resources towards eco-conscious innovations.
