EU Commission: Varhelyi has to go to the second round

Varhelyi now has 24 hours to answer further questions in writing. His hearing will be reassessed on Monday.

The Hungarian should take over the department for health and animal welfare. Previously, Varhelyi was Commissioner for EU Enlargement. He made enemies in parliament when he insulted MPs as “idiots” in front of the microphone in 2023. “I can only repeat that this was not intended for parliament,” he said in his confirmation hearing. “I regret what happened.”

If the MPs do not consider Varhelyi’s written answers to be sufficient, they can reject his candidacy. In this case, Hungary‘s Prime Minister Viktor Orban would have to nominate a replacement.

**Interview with ⁢Olivér Várhelyi: Addressing Controversy and Future‌ Goals**

*Interviewer:* Thank you for joining us today, Commissioner Várhelyi. Can⁣ you start by clarifying what you meant when you referred to the MPs ⁤as “idiots”?

*Olivér Várhelyi:* Thank you for having me. I want⁢ to start⁢ by saying that my comments were never‌ intended to⁣ be directed at the whole parliament. ⁣It was a ⁢moment of frustration, and I deeply regret ⁢that my ⁣words were taken that way. I ‍appreciate⁢ the important role that parliament plays in our governance.

*Interviewer:* That’s understandable. Moving forward, ⁣you now have 24 hours to submit ⁤your written answers to the MPs. What can you ‍share about your approach ‍to this process?

*Olivér Várhelyi:* I see this ⁤as‌ an opportunity to clarify my positions and demonstrate my commitment⁣ to ⁣the responsibilities of ⁣this new role. I plan to ‌provide thoughtful and comprehensive answers to address ⁢any concerns they might have.

*Olivér Várhelyi:* Naturally, I hope⁣ that’s ‍not the‌ case. I really believe in the vision we have for health and animal welfare. If I were to be rejected, it would be a setback, but the important work of the EU and the interests of Hungary must ⁢continue regardless. I trust in the procedures and hope for a collaborative path forward.

*Interviewer:* Lastly, what ⁢are your primary goals should you be confirmed ‍in this new role?

*Olivér Várhelyi:* My primary focus will be on enhancing ⁤public ⁣health standards across the EU and ensuring animal welfare is ⁤taken seriously.
