EU Commission: Varhelyi has to go to the second round

Varhelyi now has 24 hours to answer further questions in writing. His hearing will be reassessed on Monday.

The Hungarian should take over the department for health and animal welfare. Previously, Varhelyi was Commissioner for EU Enlargement. He made enemies in parliament when he insulted MPs as “idiots” in front of the microphone in 2023. “I can only repeat that this was not intended for parliament,” he said in his confirmation hearing. “I regret what happened.”

If the MPs do not consider Varhelyi’s written answers to be sufficient, they can reject his candidacy. In this case, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban would have to nominate a replacement.
