EU approves rules to make it easier to change cell phone batteries

O European Union Parliament approved — with 587 votes in favour, 9 once morest and 20 abstentions — the new rules that will surely change the design of future mobile devices, including iPhones and Android devices, since they determine that the batteries they should be able to be easily removed/replaced.

The legislation, in addition to targeting the sustainable/ecological side, will allow users to extend the useful life of their devices — since, as we well know, batteries are often one of the components that affect the performance of mobile devices over time.

According to the guidelines, manufacturers will be strictly prohibited from using adhesives or sticky materials that make the battery removal process difficult, among other requirements that we detail in this article. Therefore, mobile devices — such as cell phones, tablets and all types of electronics with rechargeable batteries with a capacity above 2 kilowatt-hours (kWh) — must be built in such a way as to facilitate access to the component by the user.

Although Parliament approved the rules with a vote of the entire plenary, there is still a long process ahead for them to start taking effect. Thus, it is now up to the Council of the EU to formally adopt the text, before its publication in the Official Journal of the EU and its subsequent entry into force, so that manufacturers will still have three years and a half to adopt the measures in practice.

The question that remains is whether companies will offer differentiated solutions for other markets and facilitate the removal/replacement of batteries exclusively in models sold in Europe — a situation, for example, that has been speculated for other legislation in the Old World that dictates the installation of applications in alternative stores (sideloading).
