Etna eruption in Italy forces flight diversion

In the last few hours, the activity of the Etna volcano in Italy, the largest active volcano on the European plate located on the Italian island of Sicilyhas intensified. It has ejected a cloud of ash that has forced some flights bound for Catania to be diverted to land at Palermo airport.

The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is closely monitoring the eruption, which has experienced ups and downs in recent days. Early this morning, a gradual increase in Strombolian activity was confirmed in the Voragine crater, which has now become the highest summit of Etna following the recent eruptions.

In the last few hours, an “eruptive cloud” has formed, generating “ash emissions that are dispersing towards the south,” according to the latest INGV bulletin issued at 1:45 local time (23:45 GMT).

“The average magnitude of the volcanic tremor, following a gradual increase observed since 20:00 yesterday (18:00 GMT), has reached the highest level, with an increasing trend. The centre of the source of the volcanic tremor is located east of the Voragine crater, at an altitude of regarding 2,800 metres above sea level,” it said.
