∙ Started in 2009
The initial work on the Etihad Rail network began in 2009. Two tracks with a length of 264 km have been operational since 2016. The service was started mainly to transport granulated sulfur from the gas fields at Shah and Habshan to the export hub at Ruwais. Two trains with a capacity of 22000 tonnes of sulfur are plying across the country every day.

Each train is capable of carrying 110 wagons. Once completed, the GCC rail network will connect seven emirates in the UAE and five countries in the GCC. Etihad Rail trains run from Fujairah Port and Musafa Khalifa Port to Gwaifat via Jebel Ali Port.

Cargo transportation started last year. Traveling at a speed of 120 km/h, the 4,500 horsepower freight train can carry everything from shipping containers to construction materials. 38 freight trains with more than 1000 wagons are in service. Etihad Rail handles 60 million freights a year. It is estimated that the project, which is expected to bring in 200 billion dirhams to the financial sector of the UAE, will reduce the expenses of 8 billion dirhams, including road maintenance.

600 truck trips can be avoided by one train service. By doing so, carbon emissions can be reduced by 70 to 80 percent. The project also aims to reduce carbon emissions by 21 percent by 2050.

∙ When will the passenger train arrive?
Etihad Railway’s Yatra train travels at a speed of 200 kmph. 400 people can travel at a time. The construction of the first station in Fujairah is in progress, although it has not been announced that the passenger train will start. Each wagon will be equipped with Wi-Fi, entertainment facilities, charging points and food and beverages. Traveling by train is convenient for families and tourists as well as business travelers. The travel time from Abu Dhabi to Dubai is 50 minutes. Fujairah can be reached in 100 minutes. That means you can reach the train in half the time it takes to travel by car. Once the construction is completed, the length of Etihad Rail will be 1200 km. That is the distance from London to Vienna.

The GCC countries envisage an extensive rail network connecting the UAE to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar. The plan is to build and interconnect rail networks within each country. The GCC countries including Saudi Arabia are in the construction stage of the rail project related to this. It is estimated that once the GCC rail is completed, the length of the rail line will be 2117 km. More than 200 km of the Rasalkhair-Daman route of the Saudi Rail passing through Jubail has been completed. The infrastructure development and design of the Qatar Rail has been completed. The first phase of construction of the bridge connecting Bahrain to the GCC railway network and the design of the railway track in Kuwait have been completed.
