Abu Dhabi: A new rail line is coming from Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE, to Al Danna in the Al Dhafra region. Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the UAE national rail network, and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) have signed a partnership agreement in this regard.
Located 250 kilometers west of Abu Dhabi, Al Danna has a population of 29,000. The transformation of the rural desert city began in the 1970s when it was identified as a place to house ADNOC’s industrial workers. With the arrival of the railway, ADNOC employees will be able to travel by train between the capital city and Al Danna in future.

The project is in line with the UAE leadership’s vision to accelerate economic development through collaboration between government institutions. He added that the agreement will help to raise the country’s transport and logistics sector to global standards.
The presence of companies like ADNOC to support Etihad Rail’s operations will attract more companies into the field. In February last year, Etihad Rail signed a Dh1.99 billion green loan agreement with First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) for financial support. Another contract worth Dh1.2 billion was signed in June 2022 with Spain’s CAF Company to design, manufacture, supply and maintain passenger trains for the Etihad Rail project.
By 2030, the number of train passengers in the country is expected to exceed 3.65 crore annually. Once fully operational, Etihad Rail’s freight network will be able to carry 60 million tonnes of freight annually.
