Étienne Papineau, a golfer on the rise, made history at the Victoriaville – Fenergic Canada Cup. He made a nice comeback in the standings on Sunday, becoming the first Quebec champion in the history of this tournament for the professional component.
This nearly 27-year-old golfer from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu won a $25,000 scholarship. At the start of the day, Étienne Papineau was three shots behind the leader, Ryan Curran. He finished the competition with a score of -17, one stroke ahead of Branson Ferrier. Curran finished 3rd, tied with Drew Nesbitt and Max Gilbert.
Papineau had scored a birdie in the 18th to temporarily tie the lead with Curran. Three more birdies put him ahead of Curran in the final round.
The new champion was obviously very proud of his achievement.
“It’s been a long week and the weather hasn’t always been easy. But of course I’m happy with the end result. It was nice to see so many people cheering me on until the end. I managed to stay patient, which had been more difficult during the first three rounds. I kept a good attitude, which helped me win,” he said.
Étienne Papineau was ready for this tournament in Victoriaville, on a field he already knew well. “I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the pitch, given the rain over the past few days. The greens were a little more complicated and it was a great challenge,” he said.
Alain Danault, general manager of the Victoriaville Golf Club and co-president of the Victoriaville – Fenergic Canada Cup, greatly appreciated this 10th edition. “The temperature was not ideal during the tournament, but it was much better today (Sunday). Despite everything, we welcomed one of the most beautiful crowds in our history. And people seemed to enjoy the show,” he said.
He is delighted with the victory of Étienne Papineau, whom he describes as a rising star in Quebec golf. “It’s wonderful what’s happening to him. He fully deserved this victory,” he said.
The mayor of Victoriaville, Antoine Tardif, had the chance to play with Étienne Papineau during the pro-am which preceded the tournament. “In addition to being an exceptional golfer, he is a great professional and a nice guy. I’m happy for what’s happening to him,” he said.
As for the amateur component, it was won by Aidan Gevey, an Ontario golfer. He obtained a score of -6, one stroke ahead of Émile Lebrun.
“I had a tougher start this week, but I started well today (Sunday). A rollercoaster ride, but in general, I’m happy to end my summer this way and I intend to build on that for next year,” said the winner of the amateur section.
