With the intention of reinforcing immigration control, the European Union will require a special visa to enter its territory. This is the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) that will come into force at the beginning of 2023.

ETIAS will screen all individuals from eligible countries before they travel to Europe, as they register in the ETIAS system It will be a mandatory immigration requirement.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is a fully electronic system that authorizes and tracks visitors from countries that do not require a visa to enter the Schengen area.

What people need an ETIAS travel authorization?

The ETIAS travel authorization is aimed at citizens of countries that can access the European Union space without a visa. On the Latin American side are PeruArgentina, Colombia, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, among other countries.

Currently, Peruvians with a passport are allowed to travel to all countries that belong to the Schengen zone. This means that they can spend up to 90 without presenting a visa.

However, from 2023 Peruvians wishing to travel to Europe will need to apply online for an ETIAS visa waiver to enter Schengen zone countries.

How is the ETIAS application processed?

The ETIAS travel authorization is expected to cost only 7 euros per application, although it might vary once it is launched. It has also been arranged that minors do not pay any fee and payment can be made with a credit or debit card. Once the payment is completed, the processing of the ETIAS travel authorization will begin.

The ETIAS application will take the Peruvian citizen less than 10 minutes.

The ETIAS will be valid for three consecutive years and will allow Peruvians to travel to Europe multiple times, as long as the countries they want to visit are Schengen member countries.
