On January 26, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited neighboring Sudan to meet with the Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel-Fattah Al-Burhan.

This is Mr. Ahmed’s first visit to Khartoum since the war military coup in Sudan in 2021.

Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council said in a statement that Prime Minister Abiy and General Al-Burhan held discussions on how to strengthen and strengthen bilateral relations. Also during this visit, Mr. Abiy will meet several political parties of Sudan.

Previously, Mr. Abiy and General Al-Burhan met in Ethiopia in October 2022, but the last time Mr. Abiy visited Sudan was in August 2020, under the transitional government of former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok.

Sudan’s military took power in a coup in October 2021, ending power-sharing agreements with civilian parties and plunging the country into political and economic turmoil.

In December 2022, the Sudanese military and political parties signed a framework agreement to launch a new political transition towards elections.

Relations between Khartoum and Addis Ababa have been strained in recent years, with a border dispute and refugees brought over by the two-year conflict in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia.

Conflict between the two sides increased following the conflict that broke out in November 2020 between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

Fighting in the neighboring country has forced tens of thousands of people to seek asylum in Sudan. In addition, relations between the two countries have also deteriorated because of the dispute over the Al-Fashaqa border area and the issue of the Great Renaissance hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile.
