According to Tasew, the airline signed a memorandum of understanding with Dubai-based consultancy Dar to plan the four-runway airport. Tasew explained that the airport will be located in Bishoftu, about 40 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, covering an area of ​​35 square kilometers.

According to him, the hub will be constructed in two phases: Once the first phase is completed, it should be able to handle 60 million passengers per year. After completion, the transport capacity is expected to reach 100 million passengers.

Ethiopian Airlines is the largest airline on the African continent. In the 2023/24 financial year, the company generated sales of $7 billion and carried 17.1 million passengers. Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport is currently the airline’s hub and can handle up to 25 million passengers per year.
