Ethiopia scored the first double in its history in a women’s marathon at the world championships on Saturday in Budapest. Amane Beriso Shankule won in 2h24’23”, 11” ahead of defending champion Gotytom Gebreslase.

Third best performer of all time thanks to her 2h14’58” achieved last December in Valencia, Amane Beriso Shankule won her first title at the age of 31. His main feat so far was a 2nd place obtained in the prestigious Boston Marathon, last April.

Ethiopia might have believed in a hat-trick for a long time but Yalemzerf Yehualaw got stuck in the last kilometers, struggling to grab 5th place. The bronze medal went to Fatima Ezzahra Gardadi, who conceded 54” to the world champion to give Morocco its first world podium in a women’s marathon.
