Officials of the only Telecommunications Company in Cuba (ETECSA) reported on the current effects on the Internet service and landline telephony, due to the disconnection of the National Electric System (SEN). Details immediately.
Following the disconnection of the National Electrical System (SEN) caused by the strong winds of Hurricane Rafael, Cuba faces a significant impact on its telecommunications services, according to ETECSA on its Telegram channel.
Currently, more than 1,400 radio bases were reported to be affected, which represents approximately 60% of the total of these sites throughout the national territory.
We remember that these radio bases are essential for the coverage of mobile networks, and their interruption affects a large number of users who depend on these services for cellular communication in the country.
Additionally, more than 570 cabinets that support around 90,000 landline services were out of service, creating additional problems in landline communication, which is critical in communities where the mobile network may not be as robust.
“More than 1,400 radio base sites are reported to be affected, which represents 60% of the total in the national territory,” they said.
ETECSA on service impacts due to SEN disconnection
According to ETECSA regarding the service impacts due to the disconnection of the SEN, its workers are evaluating the total impact and will establish the necessary recovery measures to restore service in the affected areas as soon as possible.
However, the restoration process could take time due to the extent of the damage and the complexity of the repairs. ETECSA’s technology, they add, is vulnerable to extreme meteorological events, such as Hurricane Rafael, which entered the country as a category 3, strongly affecting the provinces of Havana, Artemisa and Mayabeque.
At the end of October, when the great energy collapse in Cuba, ETECSA’s offices were also affected, as well as its services to clients.

**Interview with Maria Gonzalez, ETECSA Communications Director**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us, Maria. Can you give us an update on the current telecommunications situation in Cuba following Hurricane Rafael?
**Maria:** Thank you for having me. As you mentioned, Hurricane Rafael has significantly impacted our telecommunications infrastructure. With the disconnection of the National Electric System due to the strong winds, we’ve experienced extensive disruptions in both Internet service and landline telephony.
**Interviewer:** That sounds challenging. How widespread is the damage, and how many areas are affected?
**Maria:** Currently, over 1,400 radio bases have been reported as affected, which has led to outages in several regions across the country. Urban areas, in particular, are facing significant connectivity issues, as many rely heavily on mobile services.
**Interviewer:** Has ETECSA made any efforts to restore services, or are you facing obstacles due to the storm’s aftermath?
**Maria:** We are actively working to restore services as quickly as possible. Our teams are assessing the damage and prioritizing repairs in the most affected areas. However, the ongoing weather conditions and safety concerns for our technicians are hurdles we must navigate.
**Interviewer:** With the storm affecting both power and telecommunication services, what can residents do to stay informed during this time?
**Maria:** We encourage residents to rely on battery-operated radios for news updates, as well as our official channels on social media and Telegram for the latest service updates. It’s important to stay connected with family and neighbors as well.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Maria, for sharing this information. We hope for a swift recovery for everyone affected by Hurricane Rafael.
**Maria:** Thank you for having me, and we appreciate the support from the community during this difficult time.
