The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) launched this offer for cell phones at these prices this September. Where can you buy them in foreign currency?
Some of these phones can be paid for within the island in Freely Convertible Currency (MLC) or in foreign currency from a purchase abroad, as detailed on the official ETECSA website. Prices range from $177 to just over $500.
As we have pointed out on other occasions, the options for selling these phones are scarce and, for the average Cuban, they are not cheap. In fact, many consider it preferable to buy cell phones on the black market, because it is cheaper and the phones have better conditions than those offered by the company.
ETECSA cell phone prices in September
According to its official website, the island’s only telecommunications company offers only 10 models of mobile phones for sale, with availability varying by province. Cubans are not only critical of the high prices and the fact that purchases can only be made in USD or MLC.
There is also controversy because many of the phones that ETECSA sells in foreign currency are outdated, while on the “black” market you can buy models from better brands and at more affordable prices. The company, however, maintains that its devices are “official” and have a guarantee in case of failure.
The cheapest cell phone for sale in the ETECSA offices costs 177.47 MLC, and is a LG K41S, with these characteristics: Operating System: Android 9. Processor: 8 cores 1.5 GHz. Screen: IPS LCD, 6.55 inches. Storage: ROM: 32GB y RAM: 3 GB. With a single SIM, Nano SIM (4FF) + micro SD holder. The most expensive one is over 500 MLC.
Selling in Cuban pesos in ETECSA? It seems unlikely that it is in your future plans.
The bank recently stressed the urgent need to obtain fresh foreign currency, arguing that it does not have the resources to invest in improvements. In addition, it does not have equipment such as modems or landlines for replacement in case of breakdowns.
