The only telecommunications company in Cuba (ETECSA) launched this Wednesday new features for customers of Alternative Fixed Telephony, known as minute telephones.
According to the announcement by Cubacel-ETECSA on its official Telegram channel, there are “new features for Alternative Fixed Telephone Service Customers. You can now recharge your service at any time: in commercial units and with mobile recharge cards of any denomination.”
In a poster that provided further information (found at the end of this text), ETECSA specified the new “facilities” for users of the Alternative Fixed Telephone service.
New features include the ability to pay the monthly fee through Transfermóvil or Online Services, as well as the option to top up the service at any time. In addition, customers can now make international calls and send SMS, and make collect calls by dialing *99.
“These improvements are designed to offer greater convenience and flexibility to residential users, making it easier to manage and use their telephone service,” they added.

In addition to these new features and “benefits,” as ETECSA calls them, this week they also reported robberies, especially in Havana, that affect this type of service.
The entity reported, through the National Television News (NTV), an increase in the theft of copper cables. These criminal acts are seriously affecting the fixed telephone service on the island, even leaving some areas without coverage, they pointed out.
In this recent report, it was mentioned that in the Wajay area, both residents and institutions have been left without landline telephone service due to five robbery incidents.
In four of these incidents, more than 180 meters of cable were stolen on each occasion. In the fifth incident, the cable was cut, putting it out of service. The main motive behind these thefts is the extraction of copper, which is sold at high prices on the Cuban black market.
