Estudiantes de La Plata beat Barcelona de Guayaquil 4-0 and for now they are qualifying for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. Mauro Méndez scored a brace and Benjamín Rollheiser widened the gap with a great goal for the local team. In the second half, Guido Carrillo signed the fourth in the match that is played at the UNO Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium, with the refereeing of the Brazilian Wilton Sampaio and broadcast by DirecTV Sports.
At the start, Pincha had possession and played in the field of the Ecuadorian team. He warned early and following 6 minutes the Uruguayan Mauro Méndez captured the ball following a corner kick and with a half turn he opened the scoring, so much so that it allowed his team to equalize the series.
Estudiantes continued to be more and at 19 minutes Méndez appeared once more to widen the differences. A cross with effect from Leonardo Godoy arrived from the right and the Uruguayan striker won once more inside the area and with a header made it 2-0, a result that gave León the qualification to the round of 16.
Motivated by being up on the scoreboard and in the series, Eduardo Domínguez’s team did not settle and went for more. His credentials were the connections on the right side of Godoy himself and Benjamín Rollheiser, but another compass was the mobility of Franco Zapiola.
Then León lowered the intensity and gave way to Barcelona who tried to get closer with their wingers, but lacked depth. When it seemed that Estudiantes had lowered the blind, at minute 38 Rollheiser got into the area, hooked and hit a beautiful left-footed shot to place that made the flight of Argentine goalkeeper Javier Burrai sterile: 3-0 for Pincha.
At the beginning of the complement Estudiantes hit once more and the one who led the play was Guido Carrillo, who fought it, touched out with Méndez and following the pass from the Oriental, the other forward touched it almost below the arc to put the fourth.
Estudiantes seeks to reverse the defeat suffered last week in Ecuador by 2 to 1 to be able to settle among the 16 best in the competition. Those led by Eduardo Domínguez are obliged to win to avoid direct elimination: if they do so by two or more goals, they will advance to the round, while if their eventual victory is by a goal, they must define the key with kicks from the penalty mark. It is worth remembering that the old criterion of the advantage of away goals scored is no longer taken into account.
Estudiantes came to this instance for having finished second in Group C with the same points as RB Bragantino from Brazil (14) but with less goal balance. Last Saturday the team from La Plata presented a mix between starters and substitutes to face River Plate at the Monumental stadium and 30 minutes into the first half they were already losing 3-0. For this reason, the coach took care of his footballers in the face of the international crossing.
Barcelona, for its part, arrived from the Copa Libertadores in which it finished third in a zone shared with Palmeiras from Brazil, Bolívar from Bolivia and Cerro Porteño from Paraguay. In Ecuador, the local tournament has already ended, so those led by Diego López arrive in La Plata rested to try to seal their pass to the next round, on a difficult field where Pincha is undefeated in the South American Cup.
Goiás from Brazil awaits the winner of this key to play the round of 16 starting next month.
