Nearly 46,000 vaccine baits began to be distributed in the Estrie to try to avoid the reintroduction of raccoon rabies, following a case was recorded in Vermont, a few kilometers from Quebec.

These baits are placed in special places such as banks, streams, fields or even wooded areas.

“It’s a vaccine liquid inside an ampoule that has been made resistant to being dropped from the air,” explained Guillaume Tremblay, wildlife technician for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks.

The operation targets raccoons as well as other species such as skunks or foxes. It will take place until April 30 in Estrie, but also in Montérégie, in 17 towns, including Saint-Armand, Noyan and Frelighsburg.

Ultimately, the goal is to protect the population, recalls Marianne Gagnier, coordinator in the ministry, since rabies can be transmitted from animals to humans.

Another operation of this type will take place next August, on the ground and by air. This is a good time to vaccinate raccoons born in the spring that have not been vaccinated.
