Estonia’s Defense Measures: Bunkers, Howitzers, and Peaceful Preparations

Estonia intends to build a defense line to protect itself; this decision does not mean there is a real threat of military conflict, Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur said on January 25. In peacetime, it will be possible to store potatoes in bunkers, the minister noted in a conversation with newspaper Postman.

“Building bunkers does not mean we will have a war. The planned purchase of howitzers is also not preparation for war,” said Hanno Pevkur.

According to him, updating the defense structure of NATO countries was discussed at the summit in Madrid in 2022, and in 2023 Vilnius approved these plans. The head of the defense department emphasized that the measures are being taken in a peaceful situation, when there is no real threat.

At the same time, Minister Pevkur noted that the bunkers will be located “in those places on the border with the Russian Federation where we must be present in the event of a crisis.” They will provide shelter for infantry and can accommodate ammunition. In peacetime, bunkers are suitable, for example, for storing potatoes. The minister is confident that in a moment of crisis they will not be cluttered, as he believes that Estonia will know in advance regarding a possible attack.
