The journalist is of Russian origin, but was granted Estonian citizenship in 1994. Since 2017, she has worked for several Estonian online newspapers owned by the media group Rossija Segodnja.
– She is accused of violating international sanctions and treason, says an announcement from the Estonian public prosecutor Eneli Laurits.
Propaganda
Estonian security services believe they have gathered evidence that the journalist is spreading propaganda via channels that serve Russia’s aggressive goals, the indictment states.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova calls the allegation baseless and claims that the case against the journalist is “fabricated”.
– Not neutral
According to the Estonian authorities, the journalist has, among other things, participated in a study program on hybrid warfare in Sevastopol on the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula in Ukraine, led by a former Russian intelligence agent.
Estonian prosecutors claim that she “can in no way be seen as an independent, objective and neutral journalist”.
Estonia, which is a member of the EU and NATO, has a large Russian-speaking minority. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has dramatically worsened the country’s relationship with Moscow.
