The PS designated this Sunday Estelle Ceulemans to occupy second place on his list for the next European elections, behind Elio Di Rupo. Although she is best known for her union involvement at the FGTB, Estelle Ceulemans is not a neophyte in politics. Her career took her to several socialist firms, first as an advisor to Laurette Onkelinx then as deputy director to Freya Van den Bossche and Rudy Demotte. She has even already appeared on an electoral list, she confides to La Libre: “It was in the 2000s, for the municipal elections in Enghien. I was ninth on the PS list”.

Born in Liège in 1970, Estelle Ceulemans studied labor sciences at the Free University of Brussels, where she also did research, in the department of applied economics (Dulbea). In 2000, she began her career as a cabinet minister, where she mainly dealt with employment and social affairs matters.

Seven years later, she left the political world but not socialism, since she moved to the socialist union, where she was successively advisor then director of the research service, federal secretary, director of the general center and finally general secretary of the FGTB Brussels.

This union journey will be marked by his duel with Marc Goblet to succeed Anne Demelenne as number 2 of the FGTB, in 2014.

The two favorites to lead the FGTB

After having submitted her candidacy, in particular to defend the place of women in the FGTB, she withdrew at the last minute in order to avoid a split within a union divided between workers and employees.

Today, Estelle Ceulemans is entering the political arena, where she intends to “carry out the voice of workers”. Mother of two teenagers, one of whom “is going to vote for the first time” next June, the trade unionist says she is concerned by the rise of extremes. She intends to weigh in on the “enormous issues” of “employment, social protection, the climate and solidarity”.

Located in an eligible place on the list (five years ago, the Socialist Party had won two elected officials), Estelle Ceulemans is now looking for a replacement at the direction of the FGTB Brussels.
