Essap implements contingency plan for historic downspout of the Paraguay River

Asunción, IP Agency.- Essap has been maintaining a contingency plan for weeks with rice plants in the water intake area of the Viñas Cué treatment plant. It began with the downward trend of the Paraguay River that today surpassed all historical records of 120 years of records.

“Today we woke up with a record of -1.31 meters, which is almost double what it was in 2021, where it was -75 cm, and the trend indicates that this will continue to decrease,” indicated the Coordinator of Planning and Essap Technical Operation, Richard Eurich.

«It is worrying but at Essap we are working with all the equipment we have installed. “There is another team on the way to have one more reserve and we have two more pumps that we are going to install in case this continues,” he said in an interview with Paraguay TV.

This contingency plan requires an investment of G. 12,000 million for the installation so far of four rice pumps in one of the main water channels of the country.

This is a totally atypical situation, Eurich indicated, and so far the contingency plan is working. However, he asked citizens to rationalize the use of water given that summer days are coming and the downward trend will continue.

In this regard, the Ministry of the Environment reported that the Rain forecasts will be below normal Therefore, they will not be enough to replenish the aquifers and groundwater layers that supply water to Essap, sanitation boards and others.
