Esprit in bankruptcy – the classic clothing chain cannot survive

Since the beginning of the 80s, Esprit has had operations in Sweden. Initially with regular stores, but in recent years e-commerce has also been a source of income for the company. But turnover has fallen in recent years and following two stores collapsed at the beginning of April, the last remaining store changed its sign to competitor Holmlunds in June. Yesterday, the company was finally declared bankrupt and the e-commerce has also been closed, writes the site ehandel.se.

But the company has been in trouble for a long time. Already at the end of 2021, Esprit was forced to draw up a control balance sheet because the equity was less than half of the registered share capital. Rescue packages were put in from the owners, but it didn’t help, and on Monday the company was declared bankrupt.

In 2022, which is the latest known financial statement, the company had a turnover of SEK 90 million and made a loss of half a million SEK.
