Indispensable in the morning of many Brazilians, coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, and although there are risks associated with its excessive consumption, maintaining a balanced diet with it can generate several health benefits in the short and long term.

According to an analysis published in the scientific journal Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry on July 19, espresso can help inhibit the formation of proteins associated with the development of neurological diseasesincluding Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Coffee has thousands of properties, some of which are capable of alleviating the symptoms of the disease, such as antioxidants that reduce the impairment of the patient’s cognition and memory, as well as compounds that prevent the formation of amyloid and the accumulation of Tau proteins — conditions associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Mariapina D’Onofrio, a researcher at the University of Verona, led an analysis with the aim of verifying such benefits of coffee in an experiment in vitro. Experts brewed espresso shots made from fresh beans, then looked at their chemical composition using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The experiment focused on four molecules: caffeine, trigonelline, flavonoid genistein and theobromine. These isolated molecules, together with the complete espresso extract, were incubated with reduced forms of tau plates for periods of up to 40 hours.

According to experts, even in the presence of small amounts of coffee extract, the formation of plaques was compromised, and only a few short fibrils were visible, therefore, the drink could interfere with the initial events that can lead to the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

It is estimated that there are around 1.2 million cases of Alzheimer’s disease in Brazil, and although most have not yet received a diagnosis, patients undergo experimental treatments to reverse symptoms in the country. Worldwide, about 35.6 million people are diagnosed with the neurodegenerative condition.

According to the study authors, drink two or three espressos a day can provide beneficial amounts of caffeine and genistein to prevent the formation of tau plaques and therefore aid in the prevention of Alzheimer’s. It is worth noting, on the other hand, that it is still necessary to conduct further studies in the area to verify and confirm the results.

It is important to remember that excessive coffee consumption can damage heart health. Arrhythmia, nervousness and insomnia are some of the signs that you are abusing the drink, so the ideal is to keep up to three cups.

Note that this amount may vary according to the age, weight and other characteristics of the individual, so it is always recommended to consult a doctor.
