Espionage scandal in Germany in favor of China 2024-04-26 17:10:00

Although China’s foreign ministry said it was a deliberate smear campaign aimed at dynamiting China’s good relations with Europe, the scandal is shocking Germany as it came to light just days after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit to Beijing. It was described as “extremely serious” by the federal home secretary, Nancy Feather, who said: “If it is confirmed by the European Parliament that someone was working for Chinese counter-espionage, then this is an insider attack on European democracy.” Feser fired shots at both the KRA and the AfD: “Whoever employs such an employee bears his responsibility. The case must be fully elucidated and all its aspects and ramifications must be investigated,” he said characteristically. It should be noted that this was the fourth arrest of a suspect for espionage in favor of China in Germany after Scholz’s return from Beijing, as three others preceded it. All of them, according to German police, revolve around the delivery of secret cutting-edge military technology to China.

Surprise

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) appeared to be unpleasantly surprised by its awkward reaction. The press representative, Michael Pfalzgraf, spoke of a “very disturbing and disturbing” case, adding that the party does not know the details and will wait for the course of the investigations to take a position. In the meantime, the Green MP, Constantin von Notch, spoke of “another proof of the authoritarian tendencies of the AfD, a party that supports dictatorships”.

The suspect was brought to court yesterday as an agent of a foreign power, to be formally charged and remanded in custody. He went by the name “Jean G.” and it became known that since 2019 he has been a close partner in the European Parliament of Maximilian Kra, who is elected with the AfD in Saxony. According to the German media, he is a Chinese man who went to study in Germany in 2002 and stayed there after they finished, doing business and then acquiring German citizenship. “Gene G.” he made a brief detour from the SPD, but reached out to the German far-right politician because of the latter’s long-standing ties to China.

According to the police report, “Gene G.” is accused of having, since at least January 2024, repeatedly provided China’s Ministry of State Security with information on negotiations and decisions of the European Parliament, in particular on sensitive technologies with a military application. He also pretended to be an opponent of the regime in Beijing, thus managing to infiltrate Chinese anti-regime circles in Germany in order to nail them to his superiors.

Last year, the German news website t-online reported for the first time on the close ties that MEP Kra had developed in recent years with China, through a network of companies and organizations, which he established with the help of his German-Chinese partner.
