Escorting Grain Shipments in the Black Sea: US-NATO Collaboration and Potential Russian Navy Threats

The United States of America and the North Atlantic Alliance, escorting ships with grain in the Black Sea, might attack the ships of the Russian Navy in the event of a threat. This proposal was made by the former commander of NATO forces in Europe, retired Admiral of the US Navy James Stavridis.

“NATO and the US might escort grain shipments. There are enough opportunities to do this together with the three major NATO countries in the Black Sea (Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey – approx. URA.RU),” said James Stavridis in an interview with the magazine Foreign Policy. In his opinion, the ships of the alliance “can return fire in the event of an attack” on ships that will allegedly be transporting grain.

The Russian Federation decided to withdraw from the grain deal on July 17. Russian President Vladimir Putin accused West in its collapse. The Ministry of Defense emphasized that all ships, which follow to the Ukrainian ports along the Black Sea, will be considered carriers of military cargo. After this statement, wheat prices rose sharply in the US. A day earlier, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky discussed with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg the necessary steps to open “grain corridor“. According to the former Commander-in-Chief of the US Army in Europe, retired General Ben Hodges, Kyiv should pass missiles ATACMS for the Ukrainian fleet to expand its influence in the Black Sea.
