Escaping War in Sudan: A Mother’s Journey to Egypt for Eid al-Adha

Sudanese Safia Juma Adam is spending the Eid al-Adha holiday for the first time away from her home and family, following she fled the war in Sudan, which entered its eleventh week.

Safiya stayed at the Wadi Halfa border crossing for 15 days before a woman offered her one free spot on a bus to Egypt for her and her three children.

But like many Sudanese fleeing the war, the woman had to leave her husband, who might not obtain travel documents, and came to Egypt without him.

Safia told regarding the trip, its hardship and costs, saying that she had reached Halfa, but “the ticket price was very high. I had three children with me and there was no way to return.”

She added, “After I stayed in Halfa for 15 days, one of the women offered me a one-seat ticket, and I told her that I had three children with me, so she offered me to share the seats with them.”

With regard to her feeling of Eid outside her country, she said that she had never imagined that she would leave Sudan, “I originally do not have a passport. Had it not been for the war, we would not have left,” noting that she traveled to Egypt with an emergency travel document.

She added, “In Sudan, we used to gather as a family on Eid, bake bread, buy clothes for the children, and new bed linen. But this is not the case here. This is the first time that I have been sent back outside my country.”

More than 2.5 million Sudanese have been displaced from their homes by the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces that broke out on April 15, including an estimated 600,000 who have crossed into neighboring countries.

More than 250,000 people have crossed the border into Egypt, which on June 10 began requiring all Sudanese to obtain entry visas.
