In Khartoum, the sound of bullets and cannons has been the loudest for days, and terror is the master of the situation. There is no water, electricity, or fuel. Most markets and banks are closed. Suddenly, the two Sudanese young women, Zainab and Aya, found themselves in another situation following they crossed the border into Egypt.

Zainab and Aya told Sky News Arabia how they escaped from Khartoum 72 hours following the outbreak of clashes between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, and headed towards Cairo on a road trip.

Fear reigns supreme

Zainab and her family, consisting of 6 members, left Khartoum, following “death surrounded them from everywhere,” and basic facilities and services became disrupted, and she says regarding this: “We imagined that it was the end. The sounds of cannons and bullets never stopped.”

She added, “I left everything inside my house, I went out carrying only a handbag, inside which was my passport and my mobile phone.”

Zainab and her family rented a bus to take them to Egypt, and the process of getting out of Khartoum was not easy, in light of the need for large quantities of fuel to cover the distance towards the Egyptian border in the north, which is more than a thousand kilometers.

She recounts the circumstances of her arduous journey: “We stopped on the way several times for inspection. We were afraid. The sounds of bullets did not stop, and corpses filled the roads, until we reached the Arqin crossing.”

And regarding what happened following crossing it, Zainab said: “I finally felt safe, at that time I was able to eat and drink, and my sense of fear and terror disappeared.”

new trip

The young Sudanese woman, Aya, agrees with her, saying: “My feelings were troubled. I left my family and friends, and left my home and my country, but for the first time in a while I felt safe and secure.”

Zainab and Aya arrived with others in the Egyptian governorate of Aswan, and there they found the calm that had been missing for days, as the sounds of gunshots and cannons finally stopped.

From Aswan, the Sudanese group took a bus to Cairo, on a new trip, in anticipation of the situation in the coming days.

My heart is with my country

Hours later, Zainab and Aya and those accompanying them arrived in Cairo, and they say: “We felt like we were in our second home, everyone welcomes us and tries to help us.”

Stop the war

As for Zainab, she will wait for the outcome of the conflict in Sudan, until she decides whether to return to her homeland, settle in Cairo, or travel to some of her relatives in Europe.

She says, “I hope that the clashes will stop. The citizen is the only one affected. I want to return to my homeland, because I left everything there,” adding, “Please stop the war.”
