On 4 November 2023, Claude Pivi made a spectacular escape from the Central Mansion in Conakry. Ten months later (4 September 2024), despite the authorities’ best efforts, the whereabouts of the former presidential security minister remain unknown.

The escape was orchestrated by a commando team led by his son Verni Pivi, which allowed Claude Pivi to leave the detention center. The former minister was accused in the trial of the September 28, 2009 massacre, a tragic event that left 156 people dead, hundreds injured, and involved more than 109 female rape victims.

The Dixinn Criminal Court sentenced Claude Pivi to life imprisonment with a 25-year safety period, but he is still wanted for his escape.

As soon as the news of his escape became public, the Calumet Court launched an investigation. Former Attorney General Alphonse Charles Wright then offered a reward of 500 million Guinean francs for any information leading to his arrest and set up a toll-free number (1015) to report any information. Despite these measures, Claude Pivy remains at large.

The situation raises questions about the effectiveness of Guinea’s security and intelligence services in dealing with insecurity, and calls on authorities to step up efforts to tackle this thorny issue.
