(CNN) Clashes between residents and wildlife are escalating in southern Kenya. Ten lions have been killed in the past week, according to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), including six on Wednesday.
“The number of lions being killed at one time is disproportionately high,” KWS told CNN on Thursday.
Conservation groups say 19-year-old Loonkit, one of Africa’s oldest lions, was also killed a few days ago.
Clashes between humans and lions tend to increase following the drought ends, as lions find it harder to hunt and farmers lose more livestock and become more vigilant, the group said. Kenya has been hit by the worst drought in 40 years.
The six lions killed on Thursday killed 11 goats and a dog, KWS said in a statement.
Both lions lived in Amboseli National Park in Kajiado county, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, according to the United Nations.
The KWS held a meeting on Wednesday attended by local and government officials to discuss the slain lions. Discussions centered on measures to minimize human-wildlife conflicts, such as developing an early warning system to alert residents when wildlife is nearby.
