Escalating Conflict in South Lebanon: An In-Depth Look at the Clashes Between Hezbollah and Israel

South Lebanon- As soon as the Al-Jazeera car left the coastal city of Tire (south) on Wednesday morning towards the border strip between Lebanon and Israel, it discovered that all aspects of life had completely stopped and nothing was moving on the ground, except for some patrols of the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

Along the way, Al-Jazeera’s cars crossed many Lebanese villages and towns, which were completely empty of residents following their people had abandoned them towards safer areas in Tire and Sidon, to escape the indiscriminate shelling of the occupation artillery, which targeted agricultural lands and homes in those villages.

Since last October 8, the border strip has witnessed clashes and mutual bombardment between the Israeli occupation forces on the one hand, and the Lebanese Hezbollah and Palestinian factions on the other hand, in an attempt to support the Palestinian resistance in the Gaza Strip and relieve pressure on it.

In that region, there is no sound louder than the sound of the Israeli MK reconnaissance drones, which the residents of the southern villages in Lebanon call “Umm Kamel.” These drones do not leave Lebanese airspace around the clock, and some of them carry guided missiles and can target any person. A house, car, or person moves on the road without warning.

Over the course of a month, Hezbollah and the Palestinian factions targeted Israeli military sites along the border strip, in addition to bombing a number of settlements in northern Israel, led by Kiryat Shmona.

On the other hand, the occupation aircraft responded by bombing villages and towns in southern Lebanon, in addition to extensive bombing of agricultural lands and forests, within which the occupation army claims that Hezbollah fighters hide while targeting Israeli sites.

While touring the border areas, traces of Israeli artillery shells and missiles are clearly visible, which hit schools, homes, and water tanks, as well as large areas of forests and olive lands, which were burned as a result of being targeted by phosphorus bombs.

Simultaneous attacks

After a very calm morning without any clashes, the situation suddenly flared up following Hezbollah and the Al-Qassam Brigades – Lebanon simultaneously carried out missile attacks within half an hour towards Israeli military sites and several settlements.

The attacks began when Hezbollah fighters targeted with guided missiles the Israeli military positions (Al-Malikiyah, Al-Rahib and Jal Al-Deir) along the border strip.

As soon as the Israeli occupation forces began firing rockets and artillery shells at the sources of the fire, the Al-Qassam Brigades – Lebanon fired 16 rockets towards Nahariya and south of Haifa, more than 20 kilometers away from Lebanese territory.

Day following day, the possibilities of confrontations expanding into a comprehensive war are increasing, according to military and strategic expert Elias Farhat.

Farhat said – in an interview with Al Jazeera Net – that Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah identified in his last speech two situations that might cause the current escalation to turn into a comprehensive war. The first is if Israel commits an attack on the Lebanese interior, then Hezbollah will respond on the entire front and in depth. The second is if Hamas is exposed to a real threat.

He adds that Hezbollah will not allow Israel or the United States to eliminate its ally, Hamas – according to what he believes – because that will lead to the elimination of Hezbollah, pointing out that the attempt to eliminate the military body of Hamas will inevitably lead to the intervention of Hezbollah and perhaps the intervention of other forces in The region, especially Syria, Iraq, Yemen, and perhaps Iran, and thus a comprehensive confrontation occurs.

Occupancy war

The Lebanese military expert confirms that Hezbollah is deliberately bombing Israeli monitoring and reconnaissance centers equipped with advanced equipment, including radars, monitoring devices, and cameras, so that the Israeli reconnaissance network has been damaged by more than 50%. The bombing also includes Israeli military concentrations, vehicles, and tanks on the opposing sites. Israel announced that 160 soldiers were killed and wounded in these clashes.

As for Israel, it often responds to the sources of fire and its surroundings and uses artillery, missiles, and sometimes airstrikes, but the most dangerous – as Farhat says – was the use of marches, which caused losses and killed regarding 63 Hezbollah fighters and 6 civilians, including two shepherds in the border town of Wazzani, a woman and three of her grandchildren. Inside a car in the town of Ainata.

Farhat adds, “In addition to Hezbollah, the Al-Qassam Brigades – Lebanon, the military arm of the Hamas movement, participated in this confrontation and bombed several settlements, including Kiryat Shmona, while the Al-Quds Brigades, the military arm of the Islamic Jihad movement, participated, with a number of its fighters infiltrating the interior, ambushing a military vehicle and killing an officer and two soldiers.” “Israelis.”

The Fajr Forces of the Islamic Group (the Lebanese wing of the Muslim Brotherhood), in addition to the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, which includes fighters belonging to other parties, also participated in bombing Israeli settlements with missiles.

Farhat stresses that Hezbollah currently wants to engage the Israeli army in a real war of positions on the northern front, likely to develop and expand at any time. In return, Israel wants to confront Hezbollah’s attacks and take military measures to confront any attack from the north.

He added, “Indeed, Israel mobilized the 91st Galilee Division, which is regular forces, then it mobilized in the second formation the 136th Reserve Division (from those who were recently called to service following the Battle of the Al-Aqsa Flood on October 7). There is information regarding the mobilization of the 32nd Regular Division as a third formation.” .

The military expert confirms that the information indicates that half of the occupation army’s Iron Dome system, with its radars and missiles, is directed towards Lebanon for fear of launching missiles into the Israeli depths, and that a large part of the air force is on alert to intervene in the Lebanese direction.
