Erwin Steinhauer: – “Join in change or wait to die”

Krone: For many, the name Erwin Steinhauer stands for something originally Austrian – and for quality. Where do you feel artistically at home or artistically committed?
Erwin Steinhauer: I carry my brain in my stomach and mostly act on my instincts. I didn’t learn the trade, but I might never imagine anything other than becoming an actor. And when I was young, I made a lot of music. In my cabaret programs from 1974 to 1992, the music component was always at least 50 percent. When I was in the theatre, for example in the Burgtheater or the Theater in der Josefstadt, music was of secondary importance, but in 2009, through my close friendship with Peter Rosmanith and our literary work on HC Artmann’s texts, I finally brought music back to me. Being on stage with my band makes me happier than doing the same play 30 times.
