Greens: The international community must do everything to prevent open war
Vienna (OTS) – “The indiscriminate attacks on Israel and its people are an act of terror and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. The current rocket attacks on innocent civilians are unprecedented in this conflict and must be stopped immediately,” says Ewa Ernst-Dziedzic, spokeswoman for the Green Party for foreign policy and human rights, and continues: “The fact is: Israel has a guaranteed right to take action once morest terror to defend ourselves. This attack, as a Palestinian response to the increasing oppression under the illegal occupation, will only worsen the situation for Palestinian civilians. War always means incredible suffering, my thoughts go out to the victims and their families on both sides.”
“The Hamas attacks must have been planned over months and had outside support. We have to ask ourselves which forces are still behind this and whether the Islamist Hezbollah in Lebanon has a hand in it,” says Ernst-Dziedzic and states: “What is certain is that the attacks are Israel’s biggest intelligence failure since the October War of 1973. This failure is certainly also due to the domestic political unrest surrounding democracy, the rule of law and the separation of powers in Israel.”
Now further developments should be observed. “It will take some time to assess the true extent of the recent escalation. We must watch the Iranian axis’ reaction to Israel’s normalization talks with Saudi Arabia, which also undermines normalization between Iran and Saudi Arabia. But we should also keep an eye on movements on other fronts, especially in Lebanon. Iran’s role in this conflict is certainly an inglorious one,” the foreign policy spokeswoman states, concluding: “The Israeli opposition to Netanyahu appears to be history for the time being. Although military intelligence has completely failed, the question arises as to whether this will strengthen the current controversial government and further weaken Israeli democracy, or whether the anger of the Israeli population over the failure of the intelligence services will prevail and thus weaken the Netanyahu system in the long term. “
