In 2023 the Erkrath Jazz Summer will be celebrating its anniversary and it will be duly celebrated. On the first three Sundays in August, always from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., fans of handmade music can experience selected jazz artists from a wide variety of genres on the Lokschuppen stage. Admission tickets are available for a family-friendly 12 euros, children and young people up to the age of 14 have free admission.

On the third Saturday in August, August 19th, 2023, there will also be a special kind of anniversary concert: The Marion and Sobo Band will congratulate you at a musical birthday party – a free drink is included and dancing is expressly encouraged.
“I am extremely pleased that in the anniversary year we were able to put together a program that preserves the tradition of this event and at the same time looks to the future, welcomes new guests and expands the musical spectrum,” says Michael Pfleging, head of the cultural department of the city of Erkrath. The city’s culture department organizes the jazz summer together with Helmut Stein, the artistic director of the event.

For his third jazz summer following the late organizer Jacky Müller, Dr. Helmut Stein was looking for bands that were as varied as possible: “This year, visitors can look forward to four top-class bands and performers who will make the locomotive shed ring out. From American black blues in the style of Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walter to rousing swing and traditional New Orleans jazz, there’s something for everyone.”

The Bluescats kick things off with their guest musician Greg Copeland from Portsmouth, Virginia (USA), one of the rockiest living blues singers. The musicians will play the finest Southern Blues on Sunday, August 6th, 2023 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On the following Sunday, August 13th, 2023, Nina’s Rusty Horns will lure you into the locomotive shed with innovative swing and “old-time-and-dirty” jazz. In addition to rarely heard songs from the 20s and 30s, the band also plays their own pieces in German and English, which are not lacking in fire, creativity and soul.

On the third weekend in August, on Saturday, August 19, 2023, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Marion and Sobo Band’s anniversary concert is on the program. The international band mixes gypsy jazz with chansons and world music sounds to create an intoxicatingly charming, consistently European sound. The New Orleans Jazz Band of Cologne invites you to the last concert of this year’s jazz summer on the third Sunday, August 20, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. They are guests for the fifth time and this performance by the Cologne band again promises traditional New Orleans jazz, just like Jacky does
