Erick Barrondo confirms participation in the Dudince Grand Prix

Guatemala will participate next Sunday, March 25, in the World Race Walking Tour Dudinska 50 or also called the Dudince Grand Prix, which takes place in Dudince, Slovakia.

The announcement was published this followingnoon by the Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG) through a video in which its protagonist is Erick Barrondo, the only Guatemalan athlete with an Olympic medal.

Erick Barrondo: “Several walk athletes are going to travel to one of the most important competitions on the world circuit such as the Dudince circuit, Slovakia.”

Barrondo recalls that this competition: “Brings back good memories because several of the athletes have managed to win on this circuit.”

He also points out that the competition is important “because the best walkers in the world meet.” He adds: “We hope to have a good competition.”

Erick Barrondo explains that this will be a good blank for the delegation of marchers seeking to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. It will be a good parameter to know what they need and what are the points in their favor.

Finally, Barrondo says: “We continue on our way. We continue working and looking forward and with your support I am sure that we will achieve more than just a good turnout”.

Later it will be announced which athletes make up the delegation that will travel to Slovakia.

Four Olympic qualifications

The World Race Walking Tour Dudinska, also called Gran Premio de Dudince It has left throughout history great results for the national march. On this occasion we will remember the 2021 and 2022 editions.

In 2021, four qualifications were achieved towards the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, which were finally held in 2021. Uriel Barrondo, Luis Ángel Sánchez, José Ortiz and Mayra Herrera were the ones who obtained the marks to achieve their classification.

In addition, Uriel Barrondo won the 50-kilometer walk (3 hours, 47 minutes and one second) and Luis Ángel Sánchez was third (3 hours, 48 ​​minutes and 56 seconds) to have two Guatemalans on the podium.

Perfect podium for Guatemala

During the last edition, held on April 23, 2022, Guatemala made a perfect podium in the 20-kilometer walk. José Alejandro Barrondo, José Ortiz and José Calel won gold, silver and bronze, respectively.

In the women’s event, always over 20 kilometers, the Guatemalan Maritza Poncio won the silver. She timed 1 hour, 34 minutes, and 27 seconds.

Finally, in the 10 kilometer walk, Guatemala won gold in the Sub-18 and Sub-20 divisions. Bryan Matías (Under-18) was first with a time of 41 minutes and 25 seconds and Yaquelin Teletor (Under-20) was left with the privileged box with a time of 48 minutes and 51 seconds.
