Bieniemy and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid are expected to meet soon and discuss his future.
The Chiefs’ offensive coordinator’s one-year contract, Eric Bieniemywill expire, as has been the case in recent seasons, and his future in Kansas City is uncertain, sources told ESPN.
Bieniemy and the Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reidget together soon and discuss your future, whether you envision them together in Kansas City or separate, according to league sources. Bieniemy also worked on a one-year contract in 2020.
Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka has already left Kansas City to become the Giants’ offensive coordinator, leaving Bieniemy behind and making him even more essential to Kansas City’s offense for 2022.
There are no guarantees that Bieniemy will return. He has considered coaching in college, listening to other offers or even retiring a year following a physically and mentally grueling season in which the Chiefs fell one game short of the Super Bowl and Bieniemy was overlooked in the coaching hiring cycle at chief.
Bieniemy’s next meeting with Reid is likely to determine whether he will return or whether the Chiefs’ offensive coaching staff will need a revamp.
Bieniemy has been on the Kansas City staff since 2013 and has spent the past four seasons as the offensive coordinator. His tenure as offensive coordinator coincided with a four-year streak of Patrick Mahomes as Kansas City’s starting quarterback, and the Chiefs’ offense hasn’t dropped below sixth in the NFL rankings under Bieniemy.
Bieniemy, 52, has been a candidate for multiple head coaching jobs in recent seasons and has interviewed for vacant Broncos, Texans and Saints jobs.
