Vienna (OTS) – A new phase of life begins with the apprenticeship. Everyday life, routines, meaningful activities and roles change overnight, new skills and abilities have to be acquired. Occupational therapists know that this upheaval can lead to severe psychological stress and have a negative impact on our health.
World Youth Skills Day
Enabling young people to participate in social life and equal access to education and employment is of great importance for the future of young people, young adults and our society. Therefore, on July 15, as part of the “World Youth Skills Day”, the focus is on the skills of young people. The World Day of the United Nations calls for a commitment to ensure that young people are given the skills and opportunities they need to also build a future-proof and sustainable world for all. To achieve this goal, young people need a wide variety of skills and abilities. Above all, they need the competence to take care of their own health and well-being within the scope of their individual possibilities.
Occupational therapy in the context of teaching, training and the labor market
Occupational therapists support young people, such as apprentices, to improve their own health in everyday life and to recognize and avoid health-damaging factors. Health-promoting and preventive measures in the workplace are an important starting point for promoting and maintaining the health of apprentices. In consultations at vocational schools and in the workplace, occupational therapists use their ergonomic and health science expertise in particular to make the immediate workplace, as well as the work environment and work, health-promoting. With their work, occupational therapists make a significant contribution to enabling young people to participate in meaningful everyday teaching and professional life. From the development of strategies for the design of learning situations, the adaptation of the workplace or the restructuring of temporal processes in everyday life – the measures in occupational therapy are varied, explains Marion Hackl, President of Ergotherapy Austria.
