ALGIERS – The Ship Repair Company (Erenav) intends to consolidate its position through the deployment of new ship repair and construction yards, including one of international scope, with the aim of satisfying the demand for the national flag, and therefore limiting the use of foreign shipyards.

Thanks to significant investments in progress for the realization of new repair sites in Oran, Jijel and Bejaia in particular, Erenav has the ambition today to cover in the short term “100% the national needs in terms of repair” assures, in an interview with APS, its CEO Abdelaziz Tazarourte.

It is within this framework that it has just started work, at the port of Arzew, (Oran) on its most important project for years and which consists of a vast construction site, the largest in Algeria and which extends on 5 hectares, he specifies.

This infrastructure of international dimension, with its eight repair and construction workshops, will be equipped with a new dock with a capacity of 20,000 tonnes (220m in length). It is larger than that of Béjaia, until then the most important shipyard on the Algerian coast.

Created in 1987, after taking over from the former Algerian Repair and Construction Company (SARCOS), Erenav, a public company, has three units: Algiers, Oran and Bejaïa. It employs just over a thousand workers.

The realization of the Arzew site, which is part of a larger project, that of the extension of the port, requires an investment of around 20 billion DA, said the CEO of Erenav.

The port company of Arzew will be in charge of the construction of the quays for the repair, the Erenav that of the hangars, for a commissioning planned in 15 months, advances the same person in charge.

With this project, he says, “we will cover 100% of the national ship repair market, and we will even be able to open up to the international market.

This is our biggest project.”

Erenav, whose main customers are the Naval Forces Command, port companies as well as maritime transport companies, “has contributed in recent years to reducing the recourse of shipowners and national maritime companies to foreign shipyards”, for very expensive technical shutdowns and repairs, he emphasizes.

Moreover, notes Mr. Tazarourte, the largest ships of the national flag now make their technical stops in the Erenav shipyards, especially in Bejaïa. This is recently the case for the Kherrata and Gouraya ships, as well as for the ENTMV car ferries.

Specialized in particular in the repair of ships, this activity mainly includes technical shutdowns, which include major repair work required by regulations, and stopover work, which is ship maintenance for short periods.

In the long term, the company also intends to deploy at the port of Djen-djen (Jijel) by erecting a slipway (a repair basin), similar to that at the port of Algiers, specializing in repair of medium-caliber ships.

The first manager of Erenav, who notes the good financial situation of the company, indicated that its turnover in 2022 was around 2.487 billion DA, up 14% compared to 2021.

He underlined in this wake “the will of the public authorities to create an environment conducive to the development of the shipbuilding and repair sector”.

In addition, and in the field of boat building, the company which embarked on this activity in 2021, targets port companies, to which it offers port service boats with a high national integration rate.

According to Mr. Tazarourte, Erenav has already provided five mooring boats for the port of Skikda (7.5m), a depollution device for the port of Algiers, while four mooring boats (11 m) for the oil port of Arzew are under construction as well as two pilot boats (16 m).

“Almost all the components of our boats are Algerian, including the design, about 70%”, indicates the CEO of Erenav, adding that the company has its own study and design office, led by graduates from the University of Science and Technology of Oran.

Among the investments in perspective, a shipbuilding and repair site in Skikda and in the fishing and pleasure port of Tala Ilef (Bejaia). The latter will be operational in early 2024, according to Mr. Tazarourte’s assertions.
