At 11:00 p.m. (8:00 p.m. GMT), the Head of State won 49.94% of the votes out of nearly 90% of the ballots counted, according to Anadolu, opening the prospect of a second round on May 28.
Around 7.30 p.m., more than two hours following the closing of the polling stations which saw Turkish voters marching in droves, Erdogan was credited with a comfortable lead by the Anadolu agency: 54.3% of the vote once morest 39.8% for his opponent Kemal Kilicdaroglu. But this lead has melted over the hours.
For the outgoing president, a tie, or a lack of victory in the first round, would already represent a political snub, according to observers. It would also be the beginning of the end of the reign of the Islamist party AKP (Justice and Development Party), on the Turkish political scene which has lasted since 2002.
It would indeed be a first. In 2014, the former prime minister was elected president of Turkey with 51.8% of the votes in the first round, following the first election of the Turkish head of state by direct universal suffrage. In 2018, he was re-elected in the first round of the early presidential election, with 52.6% of the vote.
Even if the last figures of this election are still likely to evolve, for the third man of this election, Sinon Ogan, credited with approximately 5% of the votes, these results open the way to a second round on May 28. This would be a first, yet another, for the Turkish Republic, a centenary this year.
