Erdogan’s greeting style to Muhammad bin Salman and the hug in Saudi Arabia provokes an interaction

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Activists on social media circulated videos and photos of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s reception of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the latter’s visit to the Kingdom.

Pictures of the Saudi Crown Prince and the Turkish President’s embrace provoked an interaction between activists, whose responses and comments varied.

Last January, Erdogan stated that he would visit Saudi Arabia in February, but that visit did not happen, despite his visit to the UAE at that time and expectations that his visit to Saudi Arabia was likely to coincide with his visit to the Emirates.

At the end of last March, the Turkish Public Prosecutor requested that the trial of 26 Saudi suspects in the Khashoggi murder case be suspended and transferred to the Saudi judiciary, which had previously issued verdicts in the same case, which Turkey criticized. On April 7, the Turkish judiciary issued a decision to refer the case to Saudi Arabia.

Erdogan’s last visit to Saudi Arabia was regarding 5 years ago, in June 2017, before relations became tense amid the crisis of boycotting Qatar, and the tension was exacerbated by the killing of Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October 2018.
