Erdogan’s calls for Palestinian unity after meeting with Hamas leader

– It is fundamentally important that the Palestinians stand together in this process. The strongest response to Israel and the path to victory lies in unity and integrity, Erdogan said in a statement released by the Turkish presidential office.

The attempts to establish a ceasefire and to get emergency aid to Gaza were topics discussed by the two, according to the Turkish state TV channel TRT.

Haniyeh is the head of Hamas’s political branch. The meeting was held in Istanbul on Saturday.

The relationship between the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip has been very difficult for years. The rivalry developed into armed conflict in 2006, and they have had a tense relationship ever since.

Erdogan is said to have tried to assume a role as a mediator in the conflict between Israel and Hamas that is raging in the Gaza Strip. Instead, it is so far primarily Qatar that has functioned in this role.

The Islamist movement Hamas, which has ruled the Gaza Strip for a number of years, is considered a terrorist organization by both the US, the EU and Israel.

Hamas was behind the military attacks and terrorist actions in Israel on 7 October last year.
