Erdogan: Türkiye will build naval bases in northern Cyprus if necessary

The Turkish President said that his country would, if necessary, build naval bases and naval facilities in the internationally unrecognized Republic of Northern Cyprus.

On its social network page X, the official Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan as saying: “If necessary, Turkey will build naval bases and naval facilities in northern Cyprus.”

The Turkish President expressed his country’s readiness to negotiate and ensure peace in Cyprus, stressing that a federal solution is no longer possible on the island, which has been divided since 1974.

It is noteworthy that Turkey considers the landing of the Turkish army on the island on July 20, 1974, a “peacekeeping operation,” and indicates that it used its right to intervene as a guarantor state to protect the Turkish Cypriots.

In turn, the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Cyprus problem remains an international issue that has not been resolved to this day, and that maintaining the status quo with the presence of occupation forces, as well as the establishment of two states, are not acceptable solutions to settle the Cyprus problem.

The island of Cyprus was divided in 1974 following the Turkish military intervention, which came in response to an attempted coup in Cyprus involving Greek soldiers.

On June 21, 1974, the Turkish Armed Forces entered Northern Cyprus and took control of 37% of the country’s territory. In 1983, the establishment of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was declared, which is not recognized by any country except Turkey. Talks on the unification of Cyprus resumed in February 2014 following a two-year hiatus.
