Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said that grain shipments from Ukraine are being transferred to “rich countries”, defending Russian President Vladimir Putin’s criticism of the recent grain deal with Ukraine.
“There are no grain shipments from Russia at the moment, but Putin is right on one issue,” Bloomberg news agency quoted Erdogan as saying during a press conference held in Zagreb with his Croatian counterpart Zoran Milanovic, and was broadcast on television. Unfortunately, these grains go to rich countries, not poor countries.”
The Turkish president said that Putin was “disturbed” by the direction of grain shipments to countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia, adding: “We want to start shipping grain from Russia.”
Erdogan intends to discuss the issue with Putin next week in Uzbekistan, where they are scheduled to meet on the sidelines of a regional summit.
In his speech at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum in the Russian city of Vladivostok, Putin stressed that the West was not fair enough regarding the grain shipment deal from Ukraine, as most of the shipments did not go to the poorest countries as was announced.
