Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged American technology tycoon Elon Musk to open a Tesla electric vehicle factory in Turkey, the Turkish presidency said Monday.
The Turkish presidency said in a statement, the day following a meeting in New York between the Turkish president and the American entrepreneur, “President Erdogan called on Tesla to open its seventh factory in Turkey.”
Ankara pointed out that many large car manufacturers have assembly plants in Turkey, including Toyota, Ford, Fiat, and Renault, and Turkish contractors provide parts to Tesla.
The Turkish company “TUG” has begun producing electric SUVs since the spring.
In March, Musk confirmed a plan to build a Tesla factory in northern Mexico near Monterrey, in addition to the company’s two factories in the United States, and its “mega factories” in Germany and China.
French President Emmanuel Macron is also trying to convince Musk to open a Tesla factory in France.
At the end of July, the American company revealed an increase in its results, recording the delivery of 466,140 vehicles in the second quarter of 2023, compared to 254,695 in the previous year, under the influence of price reductions implemented several months ago.
