In what ways do geopolitical tensions among member states impact the OIC’s ability to unify and respond to collective challenges?
**Interview with Dr. Ayse Karaca, Middle East Policy Expert**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Karaca. Recently, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized the significant role of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in addressing pressing issues within the Muslim world. What does this mean for the OIC’s future influence?
**Dr. Karaca:** Thank you for having me. Erdoğan’s statements underscore a renewed sense of urgency regarding the OIC’s potential to unify and respond to crises affecting Muslim-majority countries. His call for action against challenges, such as conflict resolution and humanitarian issues, could reinvigorate the OIC’s role on the global stage, particularly as regional conflicts continue to escalate.
**Interviewer:** How has the OIC performed in recent years, and what obstacles does it face now?
**Dr. Karaca:** The OIC has faced significant challenges, including internal divisions, varying national interests among member states, and limited financial resources. While the organization has made strides in addressing issues like the Rohingya crisis and Palestinian statehood, its effectiveness has often been hampered by the divergent priorities of its 57 member countries.
**Interviewer:** Erdoğan also mentioned the need for unity among Muslim nations. How feasible is it for the OIC to achieve this unity, especially given the current geopolitical tensions?
**Dr. Karaca:** Achieving unity is undoubtedly a complex task. The geopolitical landscape is rife with conflicts that often pit member states against one another, whether it’s in the context of the Syrian civil war or the tensions between Iran and Saudi Arabia. However, Erdoğan’s leadership and calls for collective action could foster dialog and cooperation, which is essential for addressing shared concerns.
**Interviewer:** In light of Erdoğan’s recent remarks, what steps should the OIC take to enhance its effectiveness?
**Dr. Karaca:** The OIC needs to focus on enhancing its diplomatic capabilities and fostering stronger ties among its members. It would benefit from establishing clear and actionable strategies to respond to crises, improving communication with global powers, and advocating for a cohesive approach to mutual challenges. Additionally, increasing engagement with civil society could help the OIC mobilize support and resources.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Karaca, for your insights on this pressing issue. It will be interesting to see how the OIC evolves in response to the challenges ahead.
**Dr. Karaca:** Thank you for having me; it’s been a pleasure to discuss such an important topic.
