Budapest: Erdogan meets Orban – and the internet laughs at the gift

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived on Monday for his visit to Hungary and received a gift. There is speculation on social media regarding whether he is happy.

In 2003, Erdogan had a bad experience with a horse at the inauguration ceremony of a park. After the incident, the Turkish president was not seen on a horse for a long time.

That’s what it’s regarding

  • The Turkish and Hungarian presidents meet in Budapest.

  • Erdogan and Orban are celebrating the 100th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

  • They also gave each other gifts of a horse and an electric car.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Budapest on Monday for his second visit to Hungary in four months. According to the Turkish presidency, Erdogan wanted to discuss current “regional and global issues” as well as steps to deepen “bilateral cooperation” during a conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

Erdogan’s visit coincides with the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Hungary. For this celebration, the two heads of state gave each other gifts. As “Nexta” reported, Erdogan gave his Hungarian colleague an electric car, while Orban gave him a Hungarian horse named Aristocrat.

Various users on social media wondered whether Erdogan would like his gift. They point out that Erdogan fell off a horse during the inauguration of a park in Istanbul in 2003. One user commented: “Orban saw the video and would like to remind Erdogan of it.”

Erdogan and Orban didn’t say a word regarding Sweden’s accession to NATO

The question of Sweden joining NATO was not discussed. Hungary and Turkey are the last two NATO member countries whose parliaments have not yet ratified the accession protocols for Sweden. Erdogan recently linked his country’s approval of Sweden’s NATO membership to the USA supplying modern F-16 fighter jets to Turkey.

Orban, in turn, had long claimed that Sweden’s politicians and media were disparaging Hungary because of its lack of democracy. At the same time, he repeatedly announced from Budapest that they did not want to be the last country to ratify Sweden’s accession to NATO.

With his often pro-Russian stance, Orban has put his country in an outsider position in NATO and the EU. He also seeks proximity to autocrats like Erdogan. The Hungarian right-wing populist also rules his country in an authoritarian manner. Critics accuse him of restricting media freedom and the independence of the judiciary.
