Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov said Tuesday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accepted Moscow’s invitation to attend the BRICS summit scheduled for Russia.
The summit is scheduled to discuss Turkey’s request to join BRICS, while Turkey is the only NATO member country that has applied to join the group.
Media reported yesterday that Turkey has submitted an official application to join the BRICS group, which represents 45% of the world’s population and 36% of global GDP, exceeding the G7 group’s share of 30%.
The Turkish move has raised concerns in the European Union, with EU foreign affairs spokesman Peter Stano quickly reminding Ankara of the need to comply with European rules and standards.
“Candidates for EU membership must fully and unconditionally commit to the values of the Union, respect existing agreements and adhere to the Union’s common foreign and security policy. Upon accession, the candidate country must bring everything, including trade agreements, into line with EU standards and rules,” he said at a press conference in Brussels today.
The BRICS group includes 10 countries, 3 of which are Arab. Since the beginning of this year, Egypt, Iran, the Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia have joined the group, which includes Russia, Brazil, India, China and South Africa.
The Russian city of Kazan is scheduled to host the group’s summit from October 22 to 24, in the first meeting of this level for the group after the new members joined.
