The provincial minister of health of Ecuador, doctor Mbula, launched, Tuesday, May 9, a plea for the eradication of the epidemic of monkey pox in this province. According to him, more than 700 cases have already been notified and there have been 58 deaths to date since last January.
All 18 health zones are affected. The epicenter of the epidemic is in Bolomba, with the health zones of Bikoro and Ingende.
Given the scale of the disease, the province is requesting emergency support from the central government and external partners.
The first cases were notified by the health zone of Bolomba, bordering the territory of Befale (Tshuapa), where the disease is widespread. It then affected all 18 health zones in Equateur province.
For more than 4 months, the province has been fighting timidly for the care of the sick, with the support of the WHO, says the provincial minister of health.
But, given the extent of the disease, Dr. Mbula made a plea to the central government for the implementation of the program to fight once morest Monkey-Pox and the dispatch of experts with drugs:
“… We are in the process of advocating at the national level and to technical and financial partners to come and help us in this situation. We are going to ensure that a specific program is put in place so that we can fight this disease in Ecuador”.
By way of prevention, the Minister invites the population to avoid eating game found dead or sick in the forest.
