Equal Treatment in the Law: Exposing Privileges and Injustices in Brussels

“Citizens are equal before the law.” The sentence, irrevocable, is anchored in article 10 of the Constitution. It consolidates an immutable fact: regardless of gender, wealth, professional activity or level of education, Belgians must be treated in an undifferentiated manner by the law.

However, there remain a few diehards who deliberately transgress the spirit of the latter to grant themselves privileges. The case of Béa Diallo is just one illustration.

Ixelles has canceled the parking fee for its ex-alderman Bea Diallo: a “free pass” granted “in secret”?

The former Ixelles alderman was on a list of personalities exempt from parking fees in Brussels. A difference in treatment compared to the average citizen which goes all the worse since the justification of the Ixelles college is surreal: the members of the college should not pay for their parking because they are jumping “from a meeting and an inauguration to the ‘other during their working hours’.

Plumbers, electricians, doctors and other professionals who jump from one customer or patient to another while not escaping parking fines “during their working hours”, would be delighted to be caught on this white very select list.
